Amy Coney Barrett Will Fight for the Wealthy and Well-Connected — Not For Us
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate voted today to confirm Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, solidifying a 6-3 conservative majority. Despite losing the national popular vote, President Trump has now nominated three Justices to the Supreme Court, and Senate Republicans who voted to confirm President Trump’s nominees represent millions fewer Americans than their Democratic counterparts. These facts illustrate a truth we must face — American democracy is not working for everyday Americans.
Tax March Executive Director Maura Quint released the following statement in response:
“John Roberts’ Supreme Court has made it abundantly clear they prioritize the wealthy and corporate interests at the expense of the American people. The confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett today will only embolden the Court’s most conservative judges to further gut protections for Americans’ health care, free speech, and the environment, and unleash a new wave of corporate greed. This confirmation was a partisan power grab. Mitch McConnell violated all precedent and ignored or changed Senate rules to force through a Justice who will legislate from the bench. Instead of delivering aid to the millions of Americans out of work, hungry and struggling during this pandemic, Senate Republicans made this illegitimate nomination their only priority. They rushed Barrett onto the Court in less than 30 days, but those same senators still stand idly by as Americans struggle to survive this pandemic, claiming their hands are tied. It’s beyond shameful, it’s outright disgusting. As we look at a new 6-3 conservative majority, Tax March understands the stakes of this election. We must restore the Supreme Court’s credibility with the American people. This fight is just beginning.”
