“Corporate CEOs and the Rich” Protest Build Back Better Tax Provisions in Satirical Limo Tour

Maura Quint: “The ultra-rich know they can count on Republicans in Congress to vote against the interests of working families.”

WASHINGTON D.C. –– Today, activists with Tax March and MoveOn held a “Corporations and the Rich Protest Tour,” a satirical action with “rich people” riding in limousines and protesting the provisions in the Build Back Better Act that would make corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share. The caravan of limousines traveled around downtown D.C. and Capitol Hill, making stops at locations including the White House, the Capitol, the IRS, and Trump Hotel.

This “protest” comes as Congress continues to negotiate the Build Back Better Act, a bill that would make historic investments in working families. Republicans in Congress are likely to vote against the bill, continuing their pattern of siding with corporations and the wealthy over everyday Americans.

“The Build Back Better Act may be an investment in America’s working families, but why must these benefits come at the expense of us rich folk?” said notable, very real rich person Miles Reginald Sinclair III, who participated in today’s event. “This feels like pure prejudice against struggling multi-millionaires like me! I’m urging my Republican friends in Congress to remember their pro-millionaire values and vote against this bill. Our past support of congressional allies has helped us keep our money, and we’d like to see that again –– no matter what it costs or if it’s at the expense of poor people.”

“Today’s ‘protest’ was a humorous look at a sad truth –– the ultra-rich know they can count on Republicans in Congress to vote against the interests of working families and continue to support a wealthy few,” said Tax March Board Member Maura Quint. “This week, Sen. Mitch McConnell insisted that America ‘does not want and does not need’ the Build Back Better Act, but we know that he really meant the wealthy and large corporations don’t want to pay their fair share of taxes. Once again, Republicans are choosing their personal interests over vital investments in child care, health care, and infrastructure that would greatly benefit working families.”
