New US Driver’s License Rules for Seniors

The US Department of Transportation is set to introduce some changes in the license renewal for senior drivers in the country. The decision to make amendments to the renewal process was made to improve the road safety policies as well as make seniors independent.

“Total road fatalities, however, remain significantly higher than a decade ago, and America’s traffic fatality rate remains high relative to many peer nations. To reduce fatalities further, USDOT is working closely to partner with the law enforcement community to enhance traffic enforcement on our roads, including speeding, impairment, distraction, and lack of seatbelt use.” – Peter Simshauser, NHTSA Chief Counsel

Why are changes proposed for senior driving renewal?

What are the new amendments made in the licence renewal process?

The new changes in the license renewal process of senior citizens in the USA are not a federal change, but are applicable state-wise. Some of the states have opted for the change and followed some basic tests to measure the efficiency of the senior drivers.

The tests are meant to check the abilities that are needed to drive safely on the road. The requirement of renewals is categorised in three different groups. The table below will help you understand the requirement.

Between 80 and 86 years	The person will require renewal every 2 to 4 years.

Mandatory medical test for all senior drivers 

As per the new changes, seniors in the USA will have to pass certain medical tests to get their renewed license. These are the mandatory tests: 

1. Vision test – In this examination, the examiner will make sure that the individual has the required vision that will make them drive safely on the road.
2. Cognitive Screening – this test will analyze the driver’s decision-making capacity, their reflexes, and how well their judgment is on the road.
3. Road Test – this examination will be especially mandatory for those drivers who are more the 87 years old or for those whose doctor has asked for it.
