Progressive Groups Demand Chairman Neal Subpoena Trump’s Tax Returns After Mnuchin Blocks Congressional Oversight

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service once again failed to deliver Trump’s tax returns to Congress, Stand Up America and Tax March issued the following joint statement:

“While we commend Chairman Neal for his efforts to obtain Trump’s tax returns from the Treasury Department, he cannot let the Trump administration hide critical information that will allow both Congress and the American people to hold President Trump accountable. He has no choice but to subpoena the tax returns from the Treasury Department and force the IRS to comply with this request.

“The law is clear: Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and the IRS should have immediately complied with Chairman Neal’s request and furnished President Trump’s tax returns. Instead, Neal was stymied by Trump’s bogeymen who are attempting to prevent Congress from conducting effective oversight of President Trump and his administration.

“The legislative branch is a co-equal branch of government charged by the Constitution with oversight of the executive branch. If this stonewalling continues, House Democrats should look into holding Secretary Mnuchin in contempt of Congress.”
