SCOTUS Confirms Trump Not Above The Law, Progressive Groups Respond

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Supreme Court issued its decision in two cases related to Trump’s financial records, Trump v. Vance and Trump v. Mazars. On April 15, 2017, more than 125,000 people participated in the Tax March in 30 cities across the country to demand Trump release his tax returns and be transparent with the American people about his financial entanglements.

In response to today’s decisions, Tax March’s Maura Quint and Stand Up America’s Sean Eldridge released the following joint statement on behalf of the millions of Americans mobilizing to hold Trump accountable:

“Today’s rulings make clear that no one—not even the president of the United States—is above the law. The Supreme Court has now confirmed what the American people have been declaring for three years: Donald Trump cannot escape oversight and he owes the nation the truth about his financial misdeeds.

Congressional and criminal investigators must continue working to ensure that the public gets answers to the questions Trump refuses to give about his finances.

Donald Trump broke decades of precedent by refusing to release his tax returns after promising multiple times during his presidential candidacy that he would, and he’s now spent years profiting off the presidency and blocking every effort to hold him accountable for his conflicts of interest.

The American people deserve the truth, they deserve transparency, they deserve accountability—and they deserve it now.”

For three years, Stand Up America and Tax March have worked together to force the public release of Trump’s tax returns, from organizing marches across the country to pressuring congressional investigators to request their release.

Both organizations pledge to continue fighting for the public release of Trump’s taxes and for legislation like H.R.1, which requires every candidate for president and vice president to publicly release their finances.
