WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following the House’s passage of the For The People Act of 2019, Tax March Executive Director Maura Quint released the following statement:

“Today, House Democrats passed sweeping legislation to make elections more ethical, establish good-government reforms to combat corruption in Washington, and assure the American people that their elected leaders are held accountable. After years of Republican efforts to enrich the wealthy at the expense of working families, congressional Democrats are proposing bold, innovative ideas to fix our broken democracy.

“This legislation would also help answer many disturbing questions about President Trump’s financial entanglements and restore norms of transparency Trump shattered when he refused to release his tax returns. For far too long, the American people have been kept in the dark about Trump’s dubious tax schemes and conflicts of interest—and requiring the disclosure of presidential nominees’ personal and business tax returns would help ensure that his abuses of power are brought to light.

“We applaud House Democrats for passing this ambitious bill and urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to do his job and bring up H.R. 1 for a vote in the Senate.”
