The American People Have Spoken: Tax the Rich
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tax March congratulates President-Elect Joe Biden on an historic victory in the 2020 election. Voters have thoroughly rejected the last four years of Republican prioritization of corporate and wealthy interests over everyday families. Democrats are slated to control the U.S. House and the presidency.
Tax March Executive Director Maura Quint released the following statement:
“Nearly four years ago, more than 125,000 people from all backgrounds marched nationwide to demand Donald Trump release his tax returns. This first grassroots Tax March became a national movement for tax fairness and economic justice—a movement that helped defeat Trump and Republicans up and down the ballot this year. With the help of our tax justice movement, Americans rejected Trump’s corrupt economic agenda of enriching himself and his wealthy friends at the expense of working people. His 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was, and still is, one of the most unpopular pieces of legislation in years. And, in scandal after scandal, Trump and his family showed who they really fight for by funneling millions of taxpayer dollars into their own pockets and cutting sweetheart deals for campaign donors and foreign interests. This election, voters chose a better future. One where the rich and powerful pay their fair share and we invest in working families. We will no longer accept an economic system that lets America’s 644 billionaires add nearly $931 billion to their wealth during a pandemic while eight million Americans sink into poverty at the same time. Tax March urges President-elect Biden and this new Congress to take advantage of this powerful mandate to fundamentally restructure our economy and federal tax code to ensure that the rich and corporations pay their fair share. After four years of disastrous Republican policies, there will be a long road to recovery. Tax March is ready and eager to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few.”
